Domains are parts of a hierarchy of names. Syntactically, a domain name consists of a sequence of names (labels) separated by periods, they are unique, easy-to-remember address access websites, such as "example.com". Users can connect to websites using domain names thanks to the DNS system.
The purpose of domains is to allow users connected to the Internet to find websites and send E-MAIL to addresses with simple names, without having to memorize the numerical addresses that are actually found by computers or on Internet servers.
Domain names are all managed by domain registries, which delegate the reservation of domain names to registrars. Anyone who wants to create a website can register a domain name with a registrar, and there are currently over 300 million registered domain names.
